DO THE NEEDFUL (USA / INDIA)

Do the Needful are a punk Bollywood ensemble that filters retro 60s and 70's Indian pop music anthems through the prism of ghostly burlesque, spaghetti western, post-punk, and blues into something entirely unique.

Do the Needful (DTN) focuses on the era when filmi-songs were shaped as much by a menagerie of spaghetti western themes, raucous surf rock, and afro-cuban rhythms as they were by South Asian classical and folk. Featuring Hindi vocalists, Bansuri flute, guitar/fuzz organ, bass, and drums, DTN’s hypnotic beats fill the dance floor while shards of folk melodies and moody improvisation transport listeners to a different space. We evoke Bollywood's rich past and present a powerful modern masala that is a distinct product of Chicago's musical melting pot.

DTN has created a sound that brings punk rockers, music lovers, and South Asian aunties / uncles together, bridging cultural divides and shaking hips. After cutting their teeth in countless Chicago clubs, and unconventional like the middle of the Chicago River, street festivals, block parties, protests, and fundraisers, along with noted packed performances at the Old Town School of Folk Music and World Music Festival Chicago 2025. DTN’s latest album, Goods Carrier, digs deep in the hallowed soil of vintage Bollywood and returns with devine nuggets. Goods Carriages crisscross South Asian highways non-stop delivering essentials and dispensables to a hungry nation. DTN's version delivers.
